eneloop Battery History

Disposable batteries (Alkaline battery, CR-V3 battery, Lemon battery, Lithium battery, Mercury battery, Nickel oxyhydroxide battery, Water-activated battery) could be used immediately out of the package and could be stored for months or even years, without having to consider their self discharge. It largely used for powering devices that are not used often. Their ease of use was unbeatable, they could be used basically everywhere. However, once empty, they had to be thrown away and a new battery had to be purchased. Moreover, the used disposable battery cannot be recycled and has caused more waste to the environment.

Rechargeable batteries will save money, it can offer economic and environmental benefits compared to disposable batteries. Rechargeable batteries are more beneficial to both the consumers and our Earth, it could be used more than once. By re-charging, the use of one battery could be multiplied. But, before usage they had to be charged, and once charged they lost their energy rather quickly, so frequent re-charging or charging just before usage was necessary.

Survey indicated that consumers are unhappy about the inconveniences of using rechargeable batteries, then Mr Taishi Maeda in April 2005 worked very hard in exploring every means and ways to create new kind of batteries that combine the advantages of rechargeable batteries with the advantages of disposable batteries. Working towards SANYO’s Think Gaia vision (‘Gaia’ is a word rapidly taking hold in the 21st century, which describes the world as a single living organism, where all life and nature co-exist interdependently) eneloop has then became the first Think Gaia energy product. Historically disposable and rechargeable batteries had their individual advantages which were impossible to combine. For the first time in battery-history Eneloop battery has been possible to combine the advantages of rechargeable batteries with the advantages of disposable batteries.

eneloop battery was launched in the European market in 2006. Since then it has been the most successful new battery ever put on the market.
